DRUID is happy to announce the annual Call for the DRUID Academy Conference, and a first call for the new DRUID PhD Course to be held in conjunction with the DRUID Academy!
The DRUID Academy Conference and the new DRUID PhD Course are open for all PhD students working within the broad field of economics and management of innovation, entrepreneurship and organizations. Both events are designed to help outstanding PhD students improve their understanding of issues and make a significant contribution to the academic and policy debates related to the dynamics of technological, structural, institutional, and economic change and management of innovation in Denmark, the European Union, and the world.
The PhD Course is integrated with the DRUID Academy Conference and 5 ECTS Credits can be achieved with attendance and completion of both the PhD Course and the DRUID Academy Conference.
The DRUID PhD Course is a new opportunity for approximately 30 accepted DRUID Academy Conference registrants, who also apply and are selected for the PhD Course. Participants will take a unique ‘deep dive’ into innovation research to enhance their existing curricula and give a deeper understanding of issues relevant to industry and academia. Lectures will cover a range of topics including Strategy, Organization and Innovation Management, Innovation and New Technologies, Entrepreneurship, and effective ways to publish research results in the field.
The DRUID Academy Conference format follows previous DRUID Academy Conferences whereby approximately 70 accepted papers will be grouped by theme and presented in five parallel sessions. The format provides a unique opportunity for the matching and mentoring of senior researchers with PhD students during the entire event.
It is possible to attend the DRUID Academy Conference without attending the DRUID PhD Course. However, it is not possible to attend only the PhD Course without attending the Academy Conference.
Well-recognized international innovation researchers will offer sessions for the PhD Course on topics broadly covering the DRUID themes. At this moment, we have confirmed presentations from Associate Professor Dr. Christoph Grimpe of Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), Professor Dr. Uwe Cantner of Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany), and Professor Dr. Koen Frenken of the University of Utrecht (Holland). Together with a large number of senior DRUID faculty members, they will comment and interact with participants both during the PhD Course and during the Academy Conference.
For the DRUID Academy Conference, we invite papers aiming at enhancing our understanding of the dynamics of technological, structural and institutional change at the level of firms, industries, regions and nations. We encourage all PhD students to submit their research to the conference. Do not hesitate to apply even if you have not been in contact with DRUID previously. DRUID is the node for an open international network, and new partners are most welcome.
The Bent Dalum PhD Award: DRUID has an award for the most promising research project presented at the DRUID Academy Conferences. The award is given in the memory of Bent Dalum (1946-2010), one of the main drivers of PhD education in Europe within the field of innovation studies. He was active from the very beginning of the ETIC and DIMETIC programs, one of DRUID’s founders, and the main organizer of the DRUID Winter Conferences (now DRUID Academy Conferences).
Submission:
The DRUID Academy Conference is expected to accept a maximum of 70 PhD student presentations. If a greater number of applications and abstracts are submitted, we will give priority to those that are in the middle part of their PhD and put limits on the number of scholars from each university. Please read these guidelines carefully before submitting. The new DRUID PhD Course is open for up to 30 of the students who are accepted to attend the Academy Conference.
All doctoral students who wish to present a paper at the 2017 DRUID Academy Conference (without attending the DRUID PhD Course) must submit an one-page abstract (no more, no less, no tables or graphs, with a few key references allowed on page two) before the deadline of October 28, 2016 (Twelve noon, your local time) through the conference website www.druid.dk/academy2017/.
All doctoral students who submit an abstract for the Academy Conference and also wish to attend the DRUID PhD Course must additionally submit a brief motivation statement (1000 characters max., spaces included) via email to Academy2017@druid.dk. The email subject line must include your name and your submitted abstract title. Motivation statements are also due on December 8, 2016 (Noon).
Guidelines:
The abstract should start with the title of your submission, followed by your name, affiliation, year of enrolment, expected final date, and e-mail address. This information is to come before the body of the abstract, which should be written in plain text (that is, without bullet-points or other special codes).
The abstract should focus on your own contribution, not on what the existing literature has said. A few lines reviewing the existing literature are helpful, but only to position your contribution in the context of that literature. The abstract should mirror the full paper and include headings for the following points: 1) briefly describe the existing state-of-the-art; 2) explain the research gap that you are trying to fill and pose a research question; 3) give your main theoretical arguments; 4) spell out your method (and data, if an empirical paper); and 5) present your results. Submission of an abstract gives the organizers permission to disseminate it and the accompanying paper electronically or place it on the conference website. We reserve the right to reject abstracts which do not comply with the above requirements.
DRUID uses available software to control for plagiarism and to take appropriate action in severe cases. Details are available under Terms and Conditions on the website.
DRUID PhD Course and Academy Conference fees:
Each DRUID PhD Course participant will be charged a fee of Euro 500. The fee and the DRUID Society covers the combined PhD Course and Academy Conference and all meals from Sunday 15 January after breakfast until Friday 20 January, lunch included.
Participants attending only the Academy conference will be charged a fee of Euro 300. The fee and the DRUID Society covers all meals from Wednesday 18 January after lunch until Friday 20 January, lunch included.
